‘Chasing Rich’ Shows God in Action

Because of my journalism background, I tend to be a “just the facts” kind of guy. In writing a story, I want full names, ages, locations, and other details.

In his sparkling new book, Chasing Rich, author Nicholas Schwartz does the opposite. The man spotlighted in each chapter is identified only by first name.

I have to say: it works. In friend-like fashion, you read about guys like Carl, Shawn, Carson, and Chip.

Because of this, the most important element is the testimonies of God producing awesome results in men’s lives. These inspiring, captivating accounts could well stir your own search.

Stunning Turnaround

Chip’s story is particularly riveting. A Harvard Medical School graduate, in the middle of residency, he walked away to become a hedge fund manager.

Chip quickly developed a reputation as a medical savant. He could advise Wall Street investment funds which medical devices, inventions, or ideas had a chance of producing wealth. And which ones didn’t.

Chip’s income soared. He became a one-percenter, raking in millions and wearing the finest clothing and other accouterments. If he decided to visit Paris for an exotic outing, he could summon a chartered jet.

Then, everything suddenly came crashing down. When a doctor in France tipped him off to some failed clinical trials, Chip sold the company’s stock just days before the news broke.

That’s known as insider trading. Uncle Sam not only frowned on it, Chip found himself facing a five-year prison sentence.

Since he had time to get his affairs in order, Chip could accept a close friend’s invitation to attend a Christian men’s retreat. Before, he would have scoffed at the idea. In his new, humble state, Chip went.

On the final night, he decided to follow Jesus. In the words of 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature” (MEV).

There’s more to the story: while in prison, following Christ’s words from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:41-42) brought Chip through an intense, gut-wrenching test of his manhood.

The Tithe Test

Another remarkable story involves Luke, a former high school athletic trainer. Ensconced in a fashionable home with a beautiful wife and two young sons, he appeared to have it made.

That is, until one Friday afternoon. Luke bundled the boys into the car for a trip to Grandma’s house, while he and his wife headed out for a weekend getaway to celebrate their tenth anniversary.

For some reason, his wife lingered on the porch. Her body language told him something was wrong. After approaching her, she said, “I can’t do this.”

“This” was continuing their marriage. Turns out she had been having an affair. Soon, she deserted her family to live with her lover.

Unable to keep up with the mortgage on his income alone, Luke had to quit his dream job and move back to his home state to live in his parents’ basement.

He also decided to take his faith seriously. As biblical lessons sank in, Luke decided he needed to tithe. He did that, even though his new job paid far less than his old one.

Several days after giving this offering, a letter arrived. An uncle he hadn’t seen in a long time had heard of Luke’s troubles and wanted to help. Inside the envelope sat a check. For the exact amount of the tithe he had just given.
